2. Changing Hands Bookstore
You’d have to be pretty new to the Valley to be unfamiliar with Tempe’s Changing Hands Bookstore, an independent and locally owned mainstay for fans of literature and visiting authors since the 1970s. The store has now added a second location to its Tempe shop at The Newton in Central Phoenix. The newer location has a more urban feel to it, as well as First Draft — a coffee, beer and wine bar where you can grab a drink and talk lit with friends before picking up the perfect tome for the bookworm on your shopping list along with stationery and quirky gifts. Check the stores regularly for a rotating mix of new and used books, and trade in your own used books for store credit at either Changing Hands location.
