When Phoenix breaks a temperature record at the start of May (seriously, 107 degrees already?), it might seem more tragic than magic. Fortunately, these pictures remind us just how magical our fair state can be when it isn’t trying to cook us.

Arizona or Middle Earth?

This looks like the backdrop for an epic fantasy movie, but it’s actually Sedona. Of course, the word “epic” also describes Sedona.

Concrete jungle

We love photos of nature, but cities can be pretty too, in their own way. The Arizona sunset helps.

And at last I see the light…

If you didn’t know about the magical Lantern Fest, you do now. It swings through Arizona again in October, so set a reminder to get tickets.

"And at last I see the light, and it's like the sky is new." #lanternfest #breathtaking

Time travel

The gorgeously restored 1929 Orpheum Theatre should definitely be on your list of spots to see. Catch a show or take a public tour.

Atmospheric dining

This might be the last weekend you’ll want to sit on an outdoor patio. Find a place that makes the experience special.

Underground wonder

Retreating to the underground cool for the summer definitely sounds like a good plan. The beauty of Collossal Cave just adds icing to the chilled cake.

For my next trick…

What does the stunningly ugly A-10 Thunderbolt (nicknamed the “Warthog”) have to do with magic? Well, in the blink of an eye, its 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun can make an enemy tank — or anything else in its path — disappear.

Also, a flight of A-10s dropping flares were responsible for part of the famous Phoenix Lights 20 years ago.
