Hopefully it hasn’t slipped your mind that Sunday, May 14 is Mother’s Day. It’s the day you get to show your appreciation for the woman who gave you life, raised you and helps your therapist afford a mansion in Scottsdale (or one of the Valley’s other wealthiest neighborhoods).
Regardless of that last one, we love our moms, and Mother’s Day is a good time to do something special for them. To that end, we rounded up some outings and gifts moms are sure to love for Mother’s Day, or any other time of the year (it never hurts to show your appreciation regularly, after all).
Naturally, you’re planning to take mom out for brunch, lunch or dinner on Mother’s Day. She probably even has a favorite spot, which makes things easier on you (if you don’t know her favorites or are hoping to be more creative, check out our Restaurants section for some ideas). If you want to plan something more original, we have suggestions for that, as well. Read on.
Get out of the valley
On Mother’s Day, everyone and his (grand)mother is going to be out and about. If you want to avoid the metro crowds, why not take advantage of the last gasp of spring and plan a day trip – or even a weekend getaway – out of the Valley?
Sedona and its beautiful landscape are an obvious and always-popular choice, but you’re likely to find those crowds again. For a quieter experience, consider the lesser-known artist community of Tubac to the south. Founded in 1752, it is home to 80 galleries and shops with handcrafted items, a wide range of restaurants, hiking opportunities and a hotel or bed and breakfast if you wish to stay overnight.
Tell mom to take a hike (in a good way)
Spring weather won’t last forever, so savor it on a hike. Phoenix has a range of opportunities from steep workouts, such as Piestewa Peak, to easier hikes at venues that allow you enjoy the desert landscape without breaking a sweat, such as the many options in Papago Park.
Enjoy the desert in a different way
For outdoor exploring without heading into the wilderness, head over to the Desert Botanical Garden. It showcases the beautiful flora of the Sonoran Desert, along with some of the fauna, with the added advantage of places to sit, eat and relax. On Mother’s Day, mothers can get in free with a paid Child admission. Mother’s Day is also the last day to enjoy the Butterfly Pavilion where you can interact with colorful butterflies and learn about their life cycle.
Plan a picnic, with a twist
Arizona has parks at just about every turn, and the weather is still mild enough for a picnic. However, skip the fast food. Make the spread yourself with fresh ingredients from one of the many farmers markets open on Saturday. Find the one closest to you.
Going out is great, but it never hurts to add some other small token of appreciation to the day.

Arrange for some time off
For moms with little ones, one of the best gifts you can give them is some time to themselves. Dads, schedule a day of fun with the kids and send mom to a relaxing spa, a cool coffee shop with friends or to one of the many great events happening in the Valley.
