Ice skating in Phoenix

Ice Skating Phoenix

By Megan Marples

Phoenix may be sunny pretty much 365 days a year, but we still know how to celebrate the winter holidays. Venues around the state build temporary ice-skating rinks, providing the perfect activity to celebrate. Here are a few of them.

CitySkate

In the heart of downtown Phoenix, CitySkate can’t get much better, in terms of location. Inside CityScape, skaters glide around a 36-foot Christmas tree that glitters and shines. The kiddos can even visit with Santa on select afternoons in November and December. Because this ice rink is extremely popular, CitySkate offers special Express Passes for those wanting to skip the line.

CityScape, 1 E. Washington Street, Phoenix, 602.550.9561, phxicerink.com. Hours vary from November 25 to January 2. Cost: $10 to $30.

Desert Ice Skating Rink

Visit the Fairmont Princess’ skating rink that spans 6,000 feet of the resort’s property. Each night, there is a special snowfall for visitors to experience “real” snow. In addition to the ice skating rink, the Fairmont offers s’mores making and train rides at its “Christmas at the Princess” celebration. Guests receive discounts for those who bring their own skates.

Fairmont Princess, 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale, 480.585.4848, scottsdaleprincess.com. Hours vary, November 22 to December 31. Cost: $55 per vehicle (up to six wristbands).

Schnepf Farms Ice Skating

Schnepf Farms offers special events throughout the holiday season. Fridays means Date Night Skate, which includes two cups of hot chocolate in addition to regular ice skating admission. On Family Nights, which are every Monday evening, admission is two for the price of one.

Schnepf Farms, 24610 S. Rittenhouse Road, Queen Creek, 480.987.3100, schnepffarms.com. Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday to Wednesday; and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday to Sunday; start day TBA in December. Cost $12; special discounts offered.

Skate Westgate

Skate at Westgate, in between Gila River Arena and University of Phoenix Stadium, this holiday season. The rink opens on November 22, during a special event with a tree-lighting ceremony and Santa visits. Musicians will perform near the ice rink on Fridays and Saturday for a perfect soundtrack.

Westgate, 6751 N. Sunset Boulevard, Glendale, 623.385.7502, westgateaz.com. Hours vary from November 22 to January 8. Cost: $10 to $13

Winter Wonderland Ice Rink

Come to downtown Mesa to ice skate during the city’s Merry Main Street. AZ Ice has been named a partner for the event that kicks off on November 24. The 5,000-square-foot ice rink is a great place to enjoy the holidays and relax with family and friends.

East Main Street, Mesa, merrymainst.com. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday; noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Cost: $10.
