Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) kicks off its 2011-2012 season of its Theatre for Young Audiences(TYA) program on Saturday, November 12, with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
This classic children’s fantasy novel written by C. S. Lewis has been adapted for the stage as a one-act,40-minute play. ABT’s modernized rendition casts two experienced actors to play the roles of nine different characters in anaction-filled, rapid-paced story line that incorporatesremarkable sound effects.
“ABT is delighted to be working with seasoned Director Kenny Grossman for this show,” saysDirector of Children’s ProgramsKurtisW.Overby. “Kenny is the Founder and Executive Director of Spotlight Youth Theatre and the worthy recipient of seven AriZoni Awards,” continued Overby. “He is an expert in children’s stage performance and programming and he has brought new and exciting ideas to our TYA program.”
ABT’s stage adaptation is for audiences of all ages. Narrated by characters “Peter” and “Lucy,” it is a magical journey into the world of Narnia, a place with the kind of wonder and adventure that children dream about.
“This is a magical script,”said Grossman. “Turning a classic novel into a play expands the imagination and teaches kids the importance of history and literature in an artistic way they can understand.”
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe been published in 47 foreign languages and was included in Time Magazine’s100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
